Westward

Westward as an art exhibition aims to elicit a contemplative response through engaging internal reflection, prompting a reconsideration of the idealized perception of the American West that resides in our minds. The accompanying exhibition catalogue presents both the romanticized imagery and the stark, objective truths, inviting readers to navigate the intricate interplay between perception and reality.

challenge, concept & solution.

The challenge of this project involved creating a catalog for an exhibition that goes beyond the conventional approach of merely documenting artwork. The scope of the project included the curation of artworks and essays, the design and layout of a total of 140 pages as well as printing and binding the final book.

It was designed to challenge the traditional methodology of straightforwardly reproducing exhibit pieces by steering towards a more thought-provoking strategy that encourages contemplation of context and overarching themes. In the case of Westward, the exhibition delves into our perceptions of the American West through the lens of photography, unraveling diverse facets such as landscape photography, culture, politics, and economy.

Exhibition attendees are encouraged to purchase the catalog as a means to delve deeper into their understanding and explore different perspectives. The catalog was thoughtfully crafted with various paper types layered to enhance the complexity and depth of the exhibition's exploration and promises a multi-faceted journey through the intricate tapestry of the American West.

Browse the digital catalogue

The exhibition catalogue consists of four chapters, each including insightful essays delving into the overarching themes of the corresponding section. Accompanied by high-resolution images of the carefully selected artworks of the exhibition, they align with both the specific chapter's focus and the overarching narrative of the entire exhibition.

Although the catalogue is meant to be experienced as a physical version, the digital version gives a great overall impression of the final product.
